Mathematicians have mapped the inner workings of one of the most complicated structures ever studied: the object known as the exceptional Lie group E₈. This achievement is significant both as an advance in basic knowledge and because of the many connections between E₈ and other areas, including string theory and geometry. The magnitude of the calculation is staggering: the answer, if written out in tiny print, would cover an area the size of Manhattan. Mathematicians are known for their solitary work style, but the assault on E₈ is part of a large project bringing together 18 mathematicians from the U.S. and Europe for an intensive four-year collaboration. At a certain time K. started to conceive the human self as something moving. By its movements the self receives how aspects of the world change. It seems to K. that his movements have an impact on his view of the world. So a tuning of his movements would result in experiencing the world more in tune (or out of tune) . A way to understand better this sort of tuning, I suggest the following: Tuning equals shipbuilding. Shipbuilding like for the Americas Cup is a challenge. With K we can start to conceive our selfs as ships. We can start to construct our selves as ships, ships that are eager to move in our world of change like in a wild ocean.

Das ist klar. Für Malebranche allerdings unverständlich. Mit ihm darf man denken, dass die Mathematik eine Zumutung an das Bewusstsein darstellt. Mathematik stellt Möglichkeiten und zugleich Grenzen des Denkens dar. Wer zu zählen beginnt, wird einsehen, dass er unendlich lange zählen kann, dass alle Leben aller Menschen nicht ausreichen werden, um alle möglichen Zahlen zu zählen. Zugleich wird, wer zu zählen beginnt, einen Eindruck erhalten, dass der menschliche Geist Unendliches konstruieren kann.

Diese Erfahrung von Möglichkeit und Grenzen des Denkens ist ein Modus, um Widersprüche auszuhalten, zum Beispiel den Widerspruch, dass der Klimawandel von Menschen gemacht, aber von Menschen nicht abgewendet werden kann, zum Beispiel, dass Liebe Zuversicht und Verzweifllung auslösen kann.

Zahlen sind nach Malebranche etwas, das wir in uns bewegen. Wir wissen aber nicht, was es ist, das in uns die Zahlen bewegt. Hier ist ein Problem der Grenzen des Bewusstseins angesprochen. Dem Bewusstsein fehlt es an Kapazität.
